If you’re going to invest in a franchise, then you want to make sure the franchisor has proven growth over the past few years. You don’t want to buy a franchise for a brand that’s on the decline, after all. Samurai Sam’s® belongs to the Kahala Brands™ franchise system – and to say that Kahala Brands franchises are doing well is an understatement.
KAHALA BRANDS
Kahala Brands had modest beginnings as a locally owned business called Surf City Squeeze®. The owners, Keven and Kathi Blackwell, merged the company with Sports Group International in 1999 and then changed the name to Kahala Brands in 2001, at which point they begin investing in numerous businesses under their franchising system. Last year, MTY Food Groups purchased Kahala Brands for $310 million. Kahala Brands now controls 20 different franchise businesses, including Blimpie®, Cold Stone Creamery®, Pinkberry® and Samurai Sam’s, just to name a few.

Growth of Kahala Brands Franchises
The enormous merger that occurred last year bodes well for the Kahala franchises. But even before the merger, the Kahala franchises have seen a lot of development over the years. Just consider the growth of some of the following restaurants:
- Pinkberry – Pinkberry has skyrocketed over the past seven years. In 2009, there were 63 franchises in the U.S. and 2 internationally. As of 2015, there were 120 U.S.franchises and 122 international franchises.
- TacoTime – As of 2016, TacoTime boasted 144 franchises in the U.S. and 124 franchises on foreign soil.
- Cold Stone Creamery – In 2015, there were 1,235 total franchises both in the U.S. and overseas. A year later, that number increased to 1,263 franchises.
